Newton Person of the Week: Jim Lowenstern

Newton March 2012 ~
The Newton Tab and Wicked Local:

Newton —How long have you lived in Newton and what village do you live in?

I live in Newton Centre. I have been a proud resident of Newton for more than 35 years.

What made you decide to launch your own radio show?

Someone in the television and radio industry asked me if I wanted to have my own radio show and I said ‘yes’ right away. Meeting new people and networking are two important facets that I’ve used to build my business and I knew that having my own radio show would help me continue to do that.

What do you hope to bring your listeners?

My goal is for the show to share my insights on a wide range of topics, the main focus being the real estate market and the real estate industry as a whole. The guests we feature come from many different industries because I never want to limit the topics for our listeners.

How did you originally get into real estate?

Thirty years ago interest rates were at 20 percent and I owned a property and a music business that I was selling, and the agents I was working with had a lot of trouble selling it because hardly anyone could qualify for a mortgage. Finally someone made an offer, and in order to make the deal happen, I had to finance and basically handle the entire deal myself. I handed over the keys to my property to the buyer, and after paying the broker’s fee I walked away with less than five thousand dollars and a promise that the balance would be paid back to me within five years. That was my first land contract sale.

After understanding first-hand the challenges of selling my own property I could see there was an opportunity in the real estate industry for someone that could look at transactions from many different perspectives. I headed to Palm Beach, Fla. where I enjoyed an early “retirement” for a total of two months. I was 26 at the time and being idle didn’t work for me.  I immediately began to sell real estate in Palm Beach and that lasted for a few years before I returned to Newton.

As a real estate agent in Newton and a resident, what do you think draws people to move into Newton?

Newton has a lot of great features for prospective buyers like our proximity to Boston and most major highway routes, great public transportation, a great public school system, city services like our pristine streets, curbside trash removal, excellent police and fire departments, and our local government. City Hall in Newton is great because it’s really a community effort. I’ve lived in a dozen different cities and towns throughout Massachusetts and none of them compare to Newton.

What do you do in your spare time?

My wife and I like to travel as much as we can. We enjoy spending time outdoors hiking with our dog, scuba diving, and downhill skiing.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I was a professional accordion player in high school – I had a gig every weekend. I also played trumpet and French horn and later I shifted to piano, guitar, and drums. I hope my best hidden talent is my voice and rapier wit when I’m on air.

Do you have any favorite radio shows that you’ve listened to over the years? Are there any hosts you’ve modeled yourself after?

I’ve listened to and learned from a lot of radio and television talk show and late night personalities. I draw my style a little bit from each while still being true to who I am on air. I aim for my on-air personality to be as close to my off-air personality as possible. I find that people want to listen to someone who is authentic, not someone who acts differently just because they have a microphone in front of them.
